Televixy – IPTV on your own clock, from night shift to early start

Roku and Televixy: what works, and how to listen quietly

Roku is the awkward platform for this, so it pays to know its limits first. It has no sideloading at all, and players that accept an IPTV login appear in and disappear from its Channel Store depending on the region and the month. What does work: a player where your store lists one, mirroring or AirPlay from another device, or a second device on a spare HDMI port. In return, Roku has the neatest quiet-hours feature of any platform here. Private listening plays the Roku’s sound through your phone and whatever headphones are connected to it.

Keep these within reach, whatever the hour

  • A Roku streaming player or Roku TV
  • A phone with the free Roku mobile app, on the same home network
  • Your Televixy login, or a phone or computer to mirror from
  • Headphones connected to the phone, for private listening

Getting it ready for the hours you watch

  1. See which Roku you have

Open Settings, System, About. The model name there settles two things this guide depends on. First, whether it is a Roku TV, which has its own sleep timer and picture settings, or a stick or box plugged into another brand of television, which relies on that television for both. Second, whether it is a 4K model, which is where AirPlay support is most likely. Note the name before going further; it saves guessing later.

    Pick a term, no contract

  2. Search the Channel Store for a player

Press Home, open search or the Channel Store, and look for a player that accepts an Xtream login or an M3U link. Availability varies by region and changes without notice, so what you find today may be gone in a few months. If one is listed, add it and sign in with the server address, username and password. If nothing suitable appears, go on to the next step.

  3. Allow mirroring and AirPlay

Under Settings, System, Screen mirroring, choose Prompt or Always allow as the mirroring mode. Many 4K Roku models also support AirPlay, switched on under Settings, Apple AirPlay and HomeKit. Then play Televixy on the other device and send it across: Smart View or the screen-mirroring option on Android phones that offer it, AirPlay on an iPhone or iPad where your Roku supports it, Win+K on Windows. It keeps the sending device busy, and screen mirroring generally stops if that device’s screen locks.

  4. Install the Roku mobile app on your phone

The free Roku app connects to the Roku over your home network and works as a second remote. Make sure the phone is on the same Wi-Fi as the Roku, open the app and let it find the device. This is what makes quiet listening possible in the next step.

  5. Switch on private listening

In the Roku app, open the remote and tap the headphones icon. The Roku’s sound now plays through the phone instead of the television, so plug in headphones or use Bluetooth headphones already paired with the phone. Tap the icon again to send the sound back to the television. Some Roku remotes also have a headphone socket of their own; check your model.

  6. Set the caption style for Roku channels

Settings, Accessibility, Captions mode lets you choose captions always on, on replay or on mute, and Captions style changes their size and color. These apply in channels that use Roku’s captions. When you mirror a picture, the subtitles come from the player on the sending device, so switch them on there instead.

  7. On a Roku TV, set the sleep timer

Roku TV models have a sleep timer among the television settings, usually under Settings, System, Time, and some also offer it from the options (star) button while something plays. A Roku stick plugged into another brand of television relies on that television’s own timer; check your model’s settings.

  8. Darken the picture on a Roku TV

On a Roku TV, press the star button while a picture is playing and open the picture settings, where a mode such as Movie, or a lower brightness, keeps the room dim at 03:00. Names vary by model, so check your model’s settings. A Roku stick has no control over the television’s picture; use the television’s own menu.

  9. Decide whether this television needs a second device

If you will lean on catch-up and the guide most days, a Fire OS stick or Google TV streamer plugged into another HDMI input gives this television a full player with both, plus headphone pairing of its own. The Roku stays where it is for the apps it does well, and the same Televixy login goes on the new device.

Sorting it out yourself at any hour

Private listening plays nothing

The phone and the Roku must be on the same home network; a phone on mobile data cannot find the Roku. Check the phone’s own volume and that the headphones are connected to the phone, not to something else. With a mirrored picture, private listening may not carry the sound on every model, so try it once before relying on it.

Mirroring stops when the phone screen turns off

Screen mirroring needs the sending device awake. Keep the phone plugged in and raise its auto-lock time while you watch, or mirror from a laptop instead, which is less likely to lock halfway through a program.

The player you used has gone from the Channel Store

Roku removes these listings from time to time, which is why no guide can promise a particular one will be there. Your Televixy account is unaffected. Use mirroring, or move that television’s viewing to a stick.

The iPhone does not list the Roku for AirPlay

Check that AirPlay is switched on under Settings, Apple AirPlay and HomeKit on the Roku, and that the iPhone and the Roku share the same home network. If the AirPlay entry is missing from the Roku’s settings altogether, that model does not support it; mirror from another device or give the television a second device instead.

The Roku app cannot find the Roku

Both must be on the same home network, and a guest Wi-Fi network often keeps devices apart on purpose, so join the phone to the main one. Then close and reopen the app. If the Roku was recently moved to a new router, give it a minute after restarting it before the app looks again.

Roku, asked and answered

Can I sideload a player onto a Roku?

No. Roku does not allow sideloading at all. What you can install is whatever its Channel Store lists in your region; beyond that, mirroring and AirPlay from other devices are the options.

Does private listening work with Bluetooth headphones?

Yes, as long as they are paired with the phone. The Roku app plays the sound on the phone, and the phone passes it to whatever headphones it is connected to.

Which Roku models support AirPlay?

Many 4K Roku models do. If yours does, there is an Apple AirPlay and HomeKit entry in Settings; if that entry is missing, use screen mirroring or a second device.

Is a Roku a good choice if I mostly watch catch-up?

Not on its own. Catch-up depends on the player, and players on Roku come and go. For someone who mostly watches what aired during a shift, adding a Fire OS stick or Google TV device to that television is the steadier setup.

Does mirroring from my phone use one of my connections?

Yes, one. The phone is what plays the stream; the Roku only shows the picture. On a one-connection plan, that mirrored phone is the one screen playing, so nobody else in the house can start a second stream at the same moment.

What is the best second device to put beside a Roku?

A Fire OS stick (not the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which cannot sideload) or a Google TV device. Both pair Bluetooth headphones themselves, run TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro with the guide and catch-up, and plug into a spare HDMI port; switch inputs on the television to move between them and the Roku.

Can I watch a live match at 04:00 on the Roku without waking anyone?

If a player on the Roku is showing it, yes, with private listening: open the Roku app on your phone, tap the headphones icon and connect your headphones. The television speakers fall silent while the picture carries on, and turning private listening off hands the sound back. With a mirrored picture, check once beforehand that your model carries that sound to the app.
